Originally from England, she lived in Italy and studied at the University of Parma. Her areas of research are the Italian Renaissance and 19th Century English art, specifically the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and especially Dante Gabriel Rossetti, whose poems and paintings entitled The Blessed Damozel were the subject of her thesis. | 7 March | 16h30 | 3 Lectures by Rosalind Malandrinos The Pre-Raphaelites (2) An examination of the inspirations and infl uences of the early works by the three protagonists of the Brotherhood: Dante Gabriel Rossetti, William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais as well as contemporary critical responses to their work. Rosalind Malandrinos has been a part-time lecturer at the University of Cape Town for the last 7 years. Originally from England, she lived in Italy and studied at the University of Parma. | 14 March | 16h30 | 3 Lectures by Rosalind Malandrinos (3) Dante Gabriel Rossetti: from “Fair Maidens to Femmes Fatales” The final lecture will delve into the private life of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, poet, painter and natural leader as well as Founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. His personal relationships with women were represented in his art and his poetry, most significantly his wife Elizabeth Siddal, his mistress Fanny Cornforth and ultimately the wife of his best friend, Jane Morris! She has participated in many group exhibitions and has had at least 20 solo exhibitions all over South Africa. During October 2011 she contributed works to the Kalk Bay Modern ‘Art on Paper’ exhibition held at Casa Labia. She has been teaching art for over 30 years and has designed and delivered numerous workshops both nationally and abroad. | R480 for all 3 workshops. (Illustrating the different genres of vocal music; troubadours, songs, opera, operetta, as well as composers and voice categories.) Part 1 - Troubadours and Early Song, Opera and Oratorio illustrating different voice types. Virginia Oosthuizen studied in Stellenbosch, London, Salzburg and at the Vienna State Music Academy. Virginia is well loved by South African audiences for her many acclaimed interpretations of the Mozart repertoire as well as her other performances including those in Falstaff, Fidelio, Carmen and the Operettas, Die Fledermaus and The Merry Widow. Besides her operatic career she is well known for her many Lieder recitals, concerts and oratorio performances. She has lectured at both Cape Town and Stellenbosch University and given Master Classes at Pretoria University. As well as being a popular lecturer at the U.C.T. Summer school and the University of the Third Age, she recently compiled and presented, with David Kruger, a series of 13 broadcasts on German ‘Lieder’ for Fine Music Radio. | R65 per lecture or R120 if you book for both and pay in advance. | 22 April | 17h30 | Sunday Afternoon Champagne Concert Lehár, Puccini, Strauss and Barber featuring Amanda Osario (Soprano) & Victor Tichardt (Piano). Recently returned to South Africa from fulfi lling her fi rst engagement at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. Ms. Osorio completed her Performer’s Diploma in Opera and post-graduate studies at the University of Cape Town Opera School. She has performed numerous roles with UCT and Cape Town Opera including Anne Truelove in the South African premiere of Rake’s Progress, Mimi in La Boheme, Choholka in Janacek’s Vixen and Giannetta in L’Elisir d’Amore. In 2010 she sang Susanna in Le Nozze di Figaro under the direction of Angelo Gobbato and co-created the role of Lucy Lloyd for the world premiere of Peter Klatzow’s opera “Words from a Broken String.” In 2011 she was a South African representative at the Belvedere Competition in Vienna and sang Samuel Barber’s Knoxville: Summer of 1915 in the UCT Concerto Competition. | R120 includes a glass of champagne on arrival and Casa Labia’s legendary Cheese Straws. |
