| 11 May 18 May 25 May | 10h00-12h30 | Drawing Classes with Stanley Cohen and Van Zyl La Grange Stanley Cohen and Van Zyl La Grange return to Casa Labia to offer a new and different drawing course, once a week for four weeks. The four, two-hour sessions will explore varied, challenging approaches to drawing in a variety of media. Participants, working in a nurturing and non-competitive environment, will develop adventurous drawings that are both expressively individual and technically sound. Observation, imagination, interpretation, content and style will be explored towards uncovering the excitement of drawing. | R560 for all 4 workshops. | 17 May | 10h45 | The Lindbergh Arts Foundation, in association with the Casa Labia Cultural Centre, presents outstanding young British pianist James Redfern in a morning concert. In 2005 James won the Contemporary Prize at the prestigious Franz Liszt Competition in Weimar, and in 2011 he won the Ligeti Award at the IBLA Competition in Sicily. He has also recently won the Dudley International Piano Competition, and the EPTA UK Competition. Later this year he is due to appear at St Martin-in-the-Fields in London. | 6 June | 12h00 | Evelyn on Evelyn Now returned from Germany and living in Villiersdorp, Evelyn Dalberg, acclaimed singer and doyenne of South African Opera takes centre stage at the Casa Labia Cultural Centre. Evelyn will join us for an informal lunch during which she will talk about her fascinating life and eventful career. In a career spanning 25 years, both in this country and abroad, Ms Dalberg can boast having sung thirty leading roles on the stage and three for television. She is also the proud recipient of four coveted Nederburg Awards for excellence, and her contribution to the development of Opera in South Africa. | R75 includes a bowl of delicious Italian Soup served with home-baked bread and a cheese board. |

| 22 July | 17h00 for 17h30 | BITE SIZED BUTTERFLY Since its first performance at La Scala in 1904, when it was very poorly received, Madam Butterfly has been a favourite of Opera audiences all over the world. Casa Labia Cultural Centre is delighted to present Sidwill Hartman (tenor) and Lan Wang (soprano), supported by students from the University of Cape Town Opera School in this charming concert version of Madam Butterfly. Victor Trichardt (piano) Born in China, Lan Wang studied piano at the Suzhou Normal University before specialising in singing at the National Tchaikovsky Academy of Music in Kiev, Ukraine. Since 2009, she has been a student of Professor Hartman at the College of Music, University of Cape Town. While at the academy she sang Nedda in ‘Pagliacci’ and Flora in 'La Traviata', and won third place at the "Art in the 21st Century" competition in Vorzel, Ukraine. At the beginning of 2011 she performed Chinese traditional songs as a soloist with chorus at the Huaxia theatre in Shenzhen in China. Later that year she was one of the finalists in the sixth Shizuoka International Opera Competition in Japan. Since an auspicious start to his career, when as a young singer he joined the Eoan Opera Company, Sidwill Hartman has delighted Cape Town audiences with his interpretations of many romantic tenor roles, not least Pinkerton in ‘Madam Butterfly’. Hartman has made Pinkerton his own, singing it not only in South Africa but also in Europe. | R125 includes themed finger food after the performance. Cash bar available. Group discounts available. |

| 1 August | 16h30 | LLOYD POLLAK (Lecture 1) 'Impressionism: The artist looks at the first modern metropolis.' In the 1870’s the Baron Haussmann demolished the old city centre of Paris and turned it into the first modern metropolis. The lecture examines how the Impressionists portrayed a changed city. Lloyd Pollak Well known Cape Town art personality, Lloyd Pollak gained his B.A (Hons) from UCT in 1966, and thereafter spent a year at the Sorbonne before working as a copywriter in Johannesburg, London, Dublin and Sydney. In 1983 he completed the V & A course in London and gained a diploma in the History of Fine and Decorative Arts with distinction. He then ran courses on art and antiques for Sotheby's in Melbourne before returning to Cape Town where he has worked as an art critic and lecturer. | R65 per lecture including a glass of wine after the lecture. 10% discount if both lectures are booked and paid for in advance. |

| 22 August | 18h30 for 19h00 | George Hill, in association with Casa Labia Cultural Centre, presents Francois Du Toit (piano) Acknowledged as one of South Africa's leading concert pianists and musicians, Francois du Toit is an Associate Professor at the University of Cape Town. Du Toit studied in both South Africa and abroad, most notably at Trinity College of Music in London, and in Hannover, Germany. While studying abroad he distinguished himself in several important international competitions, taking top prizes in the 1991 Hannover Music Competition, the 1992 Rotterdam, the 1993 Marsala Internationals and in the 1994 Maria Callas Competition in Athens. In between lecturing in Cape Town, Francois is often invited to give Masterclasses and to sit as juror for competitions throughout the country and abroad. | R150 includes a glass of wine and wanapés on arrival.
